Slept On Phenomenon: “Let’s Get This Paper”

The Jena 6, the shooting of Sean Bell, Don Imus’ remarks, nooses on professor’s  doors [and on a Tupac statue], and the aftermath of Katrina are just a few reminders that things are a far from all good in the ‘hood that is America. At time when so much is happening to remind us that lines of race and class aren’t as blurry as we may have thought they’d be in the 21st Century, hip-hop, the “CNN of the Ghetto,” is looking a lot more like the Home Shopping Network. I’d like to take this opportunity to spotlight a song and video that’s actually about what’s REALLY going on in the streets. Don’t let the title fool you, Rich Boy’s “Let’s Get This Paper” isn’t a glorification of consumerism or greed but a meditation on what’s happening to America’s underclass in a ghetto near you. Allen Iverson’s Philly home on the market

photo snagged from realestalker

Ok, I know, I know, this is the Sucker Free blog. Supposed to be about music. But cut a girl some slack, because this man had swagger before the term became completely overused by rappers and hip hop writer nerds. And sorry, ladies, I don’t have a good photo at the moment of sexy Mr. Iverson, but I do have photos of his enormous Philadelphia estate, currently on the market if you’ve got an extra six million dollars to spare. For a detailed description of this property, Your Mama’s got the goods here.

T.I.’s home

T.I. was released from jail on a $3 million bond and will be confined to his house until his trial. He’s basically on punishment, Fed-style. Stuck in the house. For a long time. Luckily, folks are saying he’s got an in-house studio so he can record, but what sucks for him is that 1) he’s indebted to his label FOREVER. word has it Atlantic Records big shots personally put up large cash bonds to help him which means that that money will come out of his recording/marketing budgets as long as he’s signed. 2)he cannot tour, which everyone knows is where the real money comes in [hopefully, some Scream checks are still coming in], so it will be harder to get out of debt 3)he can’t promote or film any more movies–which is also good money.

You can read about the details of his confinement as well as check out some flicks here on Missinfo.tv

I got a lot of flack from readers who said that a man formerly in the drug game “needs” to have protection and that I was hating on him and didn’t understand the rules of the “street” [as if any of you readers do.] Read more…
