Prodigy was supposed to start a three and a half year jail sentence for a weapons charge yesterday, but Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Edward McLaughlin postponed the rapper’s sentencing another five weeks so that doctors could have time to collect his medical records. P’s suffers from sickle cell anemia and his lawyer is arguing that he needs to be placed in a correctional facility that has sufficient medical personnel. The judge is apparently looking into it.
Because he knew he was heading to jail, Prodigy, in hopes of drumming up support for his second proper solo LP, HNIC 2, went on a tireless promotional run in support of the record before 2007 ended. XXLMag.com caught up with him and he put a positive spin on how the situation played out. He says,
“By them locking me up, all they doing is helping me get my shit together. I’ma be cleaning myself out. No smoking, no more drinking, none of that shit. I’ma be working out every day. All they doing is turning me into Malcolm X right now. I just seen his story, how he went to jail. And he changed because of the shit that he learned about his self and about his culture, about his people. And he came home a different person. So when I get out I’m gonna be like a super powerful person. Cause all I’m gonna be doing is working out, reading, and it’s just gonna make me much more focused and much more stronger than I already am.”
He also took a swipe at the police, saying they lied on the stand at his trial. He says,
“Police followed me from a club and they illegally searched my car. They found a gun in my car. In my trial, they lied on the stand so it destroyed my illegal search case and it forced me to take a three and a half year plea bargain. Because of my criminal history, because of my record, it was no way getting around that. I had to do some kind of time after the police lied on the stand like how they did.”
Interesting.
HNIC 2 drops in March and will be translated into 1,400 different languages. It’s all about the dun language though.
