Apparently all the internet backlash The Roots have received to their new single, “Birthday Girl,” featuring Patrick Stump from Fall Out Boy, has lead to the band removing it from the U.S. release of their new album Rising Down. According to a post on Okayplayer.com, the song is now an Itunes exclusive and will be an international exclusive.
I think this was a total wrong move for ?uestlove and The Roots. I understand listening to your fan base and making sure they’re satisfied with the material you’re giving them. They’re a rather loyal fan base and they do pay to see your shows. But there also comes a time where you have to stick up for what you’re doing creatively. And if it behooved you to make a song with Patrick Stump from Fall Out Boy in the first place, there must have been some desire on your part to come with a different sound for your first single. I don’t necessarily see what the problem is. I heard the whole album, and yeah, I’ll agree that “Birthday Girl” does break up the flow a bit. But it also appears at the end of the album, last song, and it’s a good way to close out with something different than the Doomsday concepts that permeate the project.
Unless, of course, the whole idea of doing the song was a Def Jam move that The Roots were never really down with in the first place. They could have been arguing with the suits there (though I doubt the suits even know The Roots are signed to Def Jam) about this song from day one, and the fan reaction may have confirmed what they were trying to tell them.

anything the roots drop is gonna suck methinks. i know they had to start innovating but those dudes lost me with phrenology. i haven’t bought an album since that disappointment.
