Jay Electronica is a New Orleans-bred rapper who, at least in my opinion, has some enormous amount of unwarranted hipster hype. I think the guy is talented and all, but really, remember when rappers had to actually make records for people to pay attention to them? This guy just got the coffee shop and internet nerd cosign and has been touted as the second coming of… of… well, I don’t know. He’s just got a hype that doesn’t match his creative output.
Anyway, Jay opened up for Mos Def at the Nokia Theater this weekend in New York, and according to post at Parlourmagazine.com, he bombed atomically,
“At the show, this fool was DETERMINED to tell us stories from his childhood in the ‘Nolia (aka New Orlean’s Magnolia Projects).
Telling the audience that his sister made him tell this story about some dude named Dirty Joe, Jay essentially got boo’d into rapping. Smh…then Erykah came onto the stage and the crowd went wild while she song some song I’d never heard. Then when Jay lost the crowd again with personal anecdotes, he screamed Do you wanna see Mos Def?’ like Mos was coming onto the stage. But Mos is notoriously late to all of his shows and he wasn’t popping up because I bet diamonds to apples, that man Mos wasn’t even in the building yet. Smh. Also, for a rapper to name drop on stage like that is the equivalent of a lazy club DJ playing that damn ‘Mixtrack! You gotta $50 bill put your hands up!’ Fatman Scoop record. Boo hiss.”

Yea i’ve heard he bombed HARD..but after watching the video he wasn’t that bad but he was awkward on the stage to say the least

Yeah and your peoples at Parlour magazine are just trying to pull some FOX slander on a dude on the come up. Watch the youtube videos, a guy that has “just got the coffee shop and internet nerd cosign” is yelling out that music needs to change and people who never heard of this dude are FEELING IT. Yeah, them people at Parlour really know what they’re talking about. I suppose they support $?$@ Cheney and world domination, too.

You shouldn’t post an MTV review on a rapper when you base it on a completely biased and untrue article of his performance. Sounds to me and to many others that you are just plain hatin. Watch the Youtube videos….

i was there, and i went mostly for jay and to see if he lives up to the hype. sadly jay let the typical NY crowd get to him and had his emotions on his sleave after about 20 minutes. When he first came out, he had the crowd’s attention and was killing it, but after seeing the crowd warm up to him it seemed like he decided that the crowd(most of which never heard of him) wanted to hear some stories and rants that were rife with his nervous energy, it was at this point he started to lose the crowd. The unnecessary mention of Nas and how he was going to come didnt help him either, it wa almost like a tease. Once he brought Erykah out it seemed like he had the crowd backand he regained some confidence, confidence that made him tell another story. This time the crowd was lost for good. Personally i left disappointed at the crowd and at jay for letting such amateurish errors ruin his set, but on the upside, as a fan i will continue to support and i am hoping he plays NY again soon.
I also hope he doesnt become disillusioned by what happens or with NY.
Remember though, in Ny an up and comer has to earn the respect of the crowd before trying to get intimate.
