Hip Hop Live hits NYC

Ghostface and Rakim (with opener Brother Ali) have been trekking the country on the Hip-Hop Live tour, which finds the two hip-hop heavyweights hitting the stage backed by the LA-based funk band The Rhythm Roots All-Stars. Last Friday they hit the Nokia Theater for the NYC date. Ghost utterly destroyed his set, as he always does. Check out the live audio of him performing Raekwon’s verse from “C.R.E.A.M.” The headliner, Rakim, gave everyone their money’s worth as he ran through countless hits from his back catalog. It was really great to hear both artist’s original beats interpolated by a live band. Before The R left the stage he brought out his teenage son for a father son back and forth freestyle session. Check it out right here.

While his career continues to soar, Kanye is dealing with the heartbreaking loss of his mother, Donda West. After an emotional performance in Paris this weekend, Kanye is expected to attend her funeral service in Oklahoma City tomorrow and will then return to London to continue his European tour. Sometimes it helps to throw yourself into work…

Who loves Amy Winehouse more than we do?

amyw1.jpg
She might be tiny in stature but don’t underestimate the power of this little lady with large lungs! Amy Winehouse performed at the Highline Ballroom in New York City’s chic meatpacking district last night and blew the whole house down. Packed to the rim with adoring fans of all colors, ages and sexual orientations, this seemingly tortured ingenue, had us all eating out of the palm of her itty bitty hands (or at least the one not holding the refreshing beverage.) Amy performed tracks off her new album Back To Black as well as a couple special surprises, including a bluesy cover of Lauryn Hill’s “Everything Is Everything” which Amy delivered with a brooding and existentially sweet surrender . Amy will be performing at the 2007 MTV Movie Awards LIVE on June 3. Don’t miss it!
